A little of what you fancy
It’s been about six weeks since we were at the seaside. I have acute withdrawal symptoms, and much as I love reading Jeanne at Talesfromacottagegarden‘’s Monday poems, a couple of weeks ago she posted ‘Sea Fever’ by John Masefield. It increased the desire to return to the Suffolk coast- around tenfold. To ease the longing for seagulls and sand,
I raided my stash,
and found some raffia.
I twiddled for a while whilst the girls either slept or played.
Every vintage bandstand chair needs a necklace,
…and every little girls willow wigwam (maturing nicely this year) needs some decoration.
I also used a shard of victorian porcelain found whilst gardening. I have a stash of these too!
I think it’s a garland, or perhaps beachy bunting. Whatever it is it eased the coastal pangs and made me feel…
…smiley.

That is such a lovely idea - and I think all those seaside finds keep the smell of the sea for long after they have been brought home.

What a lovely little flight of fancy… and a beautiful way to remember the sea. We’ve not been near the coast this year and I miss it so much!

What a lovely post and I love the smiley pebble.
We have many a wind chime hanging around the garden fashioned out of shells, holey pebbles and glass. We tend to make it a mission everytime we head to the beach to find some washed up fishing line and all the holey finds we can.
Hope you get your fix soon and failing that head over to mine today!!
Have a lovely one,

We are off to the sea soon, I love beach combing and finding sea glass.
I would like your girls wigwam,I could hide in there with a book!

Fantastic garland!

Beachy bunting! Love it.

Best smiley face ever! And I love your tipi. We constructed one of copper rods some years back, planning to cover it with morning glory vines or thornless climbing roses…it never happened, bless us. Now it’s just the place where we hang our bird feeder. I think my children need parents who are ever so slightly more motivated…

P.S. My word captcha was “get moped.” Is that a message for you or for me?

I love your beachy decorations, and the willow wigwam is coming along great. Just right for little Pebbles

What a great idea, I shall have to try it! I know what you mean about the coast. We have to wait till the end of September to go again and it seems years away.
August 18th, 2009 at 7:38 pm
Ah, you have got me going now….oh the smell, the fresh air, the sound of the waves/shingle/pebbles, beach combing, seagulls cry, the rythmn of the sea, fish ‘n chips and mr. whippy ice cream, fishing boats, people wearing inappropriate clothing or rather, not enough clothing, just the way being at the beach makes you feel…..sigh.
Oh, don’t I go on! I think what you have made is just lovely, a wonderful way of showing and using your beautiful beach finds.

Oh I’m so glad the John Masefield poem had the desired effect! It gets me that way too - we have to wait until 11 September for our much longed-for holiday in Cornwall but we have gorgeous Aldeburgh, Southwold and Walberswick to keep us going until then - we may just be able to squeeze in a visit before we go.
Your shell garland/beach bunting is so pretty and I love the smiley stone!
Thank you for mentioning Cottage Garden and ‘Monday Poem’!

I love your collection of seashells……….. from where I am sitting I can look up and see a whole box of shells collected over the years. Every now and then I get it down and rummage through it. I loved that smiley pebble! Thanks for comment on my blog re everlasting flowers. I too had forgotten about them (plants seem to go in and out of fashion), and think I might do a post about them some time. :O)

I especially like the smiley pebble! You clever thing to have made a willow wigwam structure. A lovely shady retreat in the heat of the sun. I have lots of shells/pebbles around the garden, and I am always on the lookout for ones with holes, and stripes! x

Hi Emma, me again! This is one of my favourite poems - by A C Swinburne: http://theotherpages.org/poems/swine01.html
The John Masefield poem reminded me of it and I thought you might like it too.

Very redolent of the seaside, it made me think of a house near a cornish beach

Lovely post - the thing that caught my eye though was the stone with the white line - I have a big collection of those! The other thing I collect off the Cornish beaches are cowrie shells, dear little pink flushed gems.

Perfect summer activities to catch the magic of the season. Carry on enjoying it.

It must have been magical when the girls woke up, to find your garlands! Makes me feel young again, thinking about it! They are so beautiful, exquisite even, and inspiring. I also have a stash of beach finds, waiting to be used.
This post is quite simply gorgeous!

I too have piles of pebbles, stashes of shells as well as sea glass and china. I have long wondered what to do with some of it! Your garlanded wigwam is smashing what a fine retreat. My larger shell collections go on to the rockery so it is becoming more of a shellery!
